This is the year of disruption in the average workplace. Personally, I’ve experienced workdays where I’ve attended multiple video conferences with multiple companies and used both Teams and Zoom back to back. It’s clear that both of these platforms are popular for a reason but it’s well worth comparing the two before deciding on which platform might be the best choice for your organization to standardize on.

Features and Usability
It’s very clear that Microsoft Teams was designed around a comprehensive approach to internal communication within an organization. Though video conferencing is a feature within Teams, it’s skill set is vast and includes an in-depth chat, Office 365 syncing, file sharing, full calendar support, and more. Microsoft’s goal here is to consolidate what would typically require multiple apps and services and bring them all into one platform that your entire organization can operate within. To get the most out of Microsoft Teams, an organization should plan on utilizing the full suite of office software from Microsoft.
Zoom’s purpose is a bit more straightforward. It provides high-quality audio and video teleconferencing. The result is a relatively streamlined experience that requires very little setup before you’re participating in a high-quality video conference with your participants. This dedication to meeting this need in communication effectively means that what Zoom offers in terms of full collaboration when compared to Teams is a bit lacking. Though to be fair, Zoom was never intended to be utilized in the same way Microsoft Teams was designed to be. They’re uniquely different platforms that both have positive aspects and both include audio and video conferencing capability.
Microsoft Teams and Zoom both offer a free version. Both of these options are limited in functionality and would not likely suffice as a standardized choice for an entire organization but they may be a perfect option for trial and demo purposes.
Microsoft Teams is included within the Office 365 bundles that are available in three tiers. The entry-level option is $5.00 per user per month and provides a limited number of Microsoft Office services including Teams. The second tier is $12.50 per user per month and adds the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and others. The highest Office 365 tier is $20 per month and includes all of the above features with an advanced security feature set. Each of these options requires a one year contract.
Zoom’s Pro plan is $14.99 per month per user and provides conferencing for up to 100 participants for up to a 24-hour meeting duration. Its Business plan is $19.99 per month per user (starting at 10 users for $199 per month) and allows for up to 300 participants and its Enterprise plan is $19.99 per month per user (starting at 100 users for $1,999 per month) and includes unlimited cloud storage and discounts on Zoom’s webinar features.

Zoom or Teams?
There isn’t a clear answer when it comes to which communication platform is the best, but it’s likely we can determine which is the best choice for your organization.
