Are Thermal Imaging cameras a fool-proof solution during Covid-19?

Covid Thermal Imaging Cameras | In many areas, restrictions in the workplace are beginning to ease. Many leaders among organizations are being introduced to various techniques to consider to maintain a safe environment for both employees and clients. One technology trending currently is Thermal Imaging. Reportedly deployed by Amazon, grocery stores, houses of worship, factories, and more are investing in thermal imaging to safeguard against Covid-19. U.S. based company FLIR, a thermal camera company, has reported demand for thermal technology has increased 700% amidst the pandemic. So is thermal technology the end all fool-proof solution for your organization? The answer is no.

According to a recent article from Wired Magazine, “The FDA says infrared thermometers and cameras can be an accurate way to check for a fever. But temperature checkpoints may not provide much protection from Covid-19 in workplaces or other venues, even when combined with health questionnaires. Countries that set up checkpoints at ports to screen for fevers or other symptoms during SARS, Ebola, and swine flu outbreaks had little success at keeping out infectious people. What’s known about the novel coronavirus suggests temperature screening will have little impact during the much larger Covid-19 pandemic.”

It’s important to understand that thermal cameras do not actually measure temperature. It’s the difference in energy emitted from one object to another that’s displayed. Considering this, the systems require consistent recalibration to account for various scenarios regarding the time of day and the temperature outside as employees and clients enter.

Another important aspect to note is the high possibility that someone carrying the virus may not show symptoms as they pass through the thermal camera system.

Does this mean thermal imaging is useless? Absolutely not. It’s important, though not to approach it as a complete protective solution. Considering the investment required for this technology and your organization’s size, Thermal imaging may or may not be a wise piece to the puzzle when it comes to making your workplace feel and operate safely. Ultimately, it’s important to speak to a security engineer and develop an inclusive plan that is both effective and affordable.
