Are Virginia Classrooms Ready for the New Computer Science Standards?
Virginia schools must fully adopt the state’s new computer science standards during the 2026–2027 school year. Preparing for that shift requires more than adding displays and student devices. Classrooms must help students show their work, solve problems together, share physical projects, and keep learning when technology fails.
The Virginia Department of Education approved the 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning in June 2024. Virginia’s Digital Learning Integration standards also ask students to design, solve problems, communicate, and work with others.
Those goals require classrooms built for active learning. A room designed mainly for slides may limit what teachers and students can do.
Match Classroom Technology to Learning Activities
Start with teachers and curriculum leaders. Choose common activities from each grade level and course, such as:
- Live coding and algorithm demonstrations
- Small-group problem-solving
- Student presentations and peer review
- Robotics and physical-computing demonstrations
- Remote visits from experts
- Recorded demonstrations
- Accessible participation for students with disabilities
For each activity, list what teachers and students must see, hear, control, and share.
A group may need to show its code and physical prototype at once. A teacher may need to move between tables while marking up an example. A remote mentor may need clear room audio more than a sharper display.
These details should guide room design.
Make Code Readable from Every Seat
Code, diagrams, terminal output, and error messages contain small, dense details. Test each display with real course material from the farthest seat.
Check:
- Display size and resolution
- Text size
- Contrast
- Viewing distance
- Glare
- Sightlines
A display may show video well while making code hard to read.
Some activities may benefit from a second display or displays for each group. If you add screens, give teachers a simple way to choose what each screen shows and return the room to its normal setup.
Make Sharing Simple
Students may use several types of devices and ports. Provide a tested mix of wired and wireless sharing. Test every method with school-managed teacher and student devices under the school’s network rules.
Schools should also decide how guests and personal devices can connect.
Test and document:
- The first connection
- Privacy controls
- Presenter approval
- Switching between students
- Audio playback
- Recovery after a failed connection
Keep working adapters and a backup sharing method in each room. A long connection delay can consume much of a class activity.
Document cameras can help teachers show circuit boards, sketches, models, and prototypes. Place and light the camera for the objects teachers will use.
Plan Audio for Discussion
Computer science classes depend on conversation. Students explain their reasoning, compare methods, and ask questions. Remote guests, recordings, and accessibility tools also need clear speech.
Assess:
- Background noise
- Heating and cooling noise
- Echo
- Teacher voice coverage
- Microphone pickup
- Speech clarity throughout the room
More volume will not solve every audio problem. Choose equipment based on the room and how people will use it.
Support Movement, Power, and Network Use
Teachers need controls and connections they can use from several places in the room. Students need safe access to power without loose cables across walkways.
Test the wireless network while many students use development tools, cloud services, screen sharing, and video at the same time. Average web use will not show how the network performs during a full class activity.
Robotics and physical-computing courses may also use boards, sensors, cameras, and USB devices. Plan for:
- Storage
- Charging
- Inventory control
- Suitable work surfaces
- Displaying software and physical results together
Include Accessibility from the Start
Captions address only one part of classroom access. Review:
- Control placement and labels
- Display visibility
- Color and contrast
- Keyboard access
- Voice reinforcement
- Assistive listening systems where required
- Caption accuracy
- Alternatives to visual and audio content
Include special education and accessibility staff in classroom pilots. Match the technology to each student’s accommodation and learning plan.
Test Real Courses in Real Classrooms
Choose several rooms and activities that represent different age groups, courses, and teaching methods. Train the teachers, observe live lessons, and gather feedback from both teachers and students.
Measure:
- Time needed to begin sharing
- Failed connections
- Screen visibility from each seat
- Teacher movement
- Remote participant clarity
- Support requests
- Recovery time after a failure
Use the results to define room types, approved connection methods, quick-start guides, and teacher training.

Make Every Room Easy to Use
Teachers may avoid a feature if they cannot find or use it during class. Use the same labels, controls, and default settings across rooms whenever possible.
Base training on common classroom tasks:
- Start a coding demonstration
- Let a student present
- Connect a remote guest
- Recover from a failed share
- End the session without leaving student work on screen
This approach gives teachers practice with the tasks they will perform under real classroom conditions.
Use a Readiness Rubric
Score each pilot room on a short set of measures:
- Code readability from the farthest seat
- Time required to share a student device
- Ability to show code and a physical result together
- Teacher mobility
- Clarity of student discussion
- Wireless reliability under load
- Accessibility
- Recovery after a failed connection
- Teacher confidence after a live lesson
Assign each problem to the team that can solve it. A blocked application needs help from the device or network team. An unreadable demonstration may require changes to the display, layout, or teaching material.
Use the pilot results to set priorities. Some rooms may need only better adapters, clearer instructions, and staff training. Others may need improvements to power, wireless service, acoustics, displays, or cameras. A few may need a full redesign.
Classroom evidence will help schools spend money where it can improve teaching and learning most.
