What happens to the phones when there is an internet outage?

Many companies today enjoy the benefits of business cloud phone systems.  These systems rely on a reliable, stable internet connection.  Common questions are, “what happens when we have an internet outage?”.  The simplest answer is that if phones cannot reach the internet, then they stop ringing.

The next question we get from our clients is, “can something be done to prevent this?”.  The answer, thankfully, is yes.  In fact, these types of business phone systems can be enabled with three business continuity solutions.

Destination not reachable call forwarding

The first is a feature called destination not reachable call forwarding.  When the hosted system is set up, a backup phone number is added to the configuration.  Therefore, if the internet goes, outcalls are automatically forwarded to this number.  Typically a cell phone or analog line is best.

This is a handy feature, but it does have one drawback.  For instance, if a business receives high inbound phone traffic, the single line cannot handle the load. Therefore, the line will ring busy.

Backup internet circuit from another service provider

The second option to keeping the phones ringing is to add a backup internet circuit from another service provider.  Firewalls can be set up with multiple internet connections in high availability.  On the other hand, if your office does not have multiple service providers available, a 4G LTE modem can be added for the cell phone network’s failover.

This is a great option for many companies to keep business flowing.

Hybridization

The third option for business continuity is hybridization.  Some hosted phone systems are capable of a hybrid configuration.  For example, this setup would allow your office to install a small phone server in your office to accept traditional phone circuits.  Moreover, these connections do not require internet connectivity.

If your hosted phone system loses connection to the internet, the phones will automatically connect to the local phone service to access the traditional circuits.
