PROJECT SUMMARY

MEB needed to bridge daily collaboration between its Chesapeake HQ and Richmond office and modernize training for crews who spend most of their time in the field. Driving between offices for meetings was costly; phone calls weren’t enough.
VIcom partnered with MEB to design and implement simple, high-impact spaces optimized for ease of use by everyone from field leaders to executives. The result: real-time collaboration without the drive, hybrid training that reaches crews wherever they are, and rooms that see heavy daily use. The tech presence also supports recruiting and client impressions. Success at Chesapeake is now the blueprint for MEB’s Richmond build-out.
VIcom responded with a tailored plan that balanced professional-grade AV with the simplicity MEB’s teams needed, ultimately winning the project through listening and collaboration. From the beginning, VIcom embraced a true partnership model: MEB’s leadership, project managers, and field supervisors were involved alongside VIcom’s engineering and field staff. Stakeholder meetings focused less on specs and more on use cases: how to make meetings more productive, how to train crews without pulling them off jobsites, and how to connect Chesapeake and Richmond seamlessly. “They weren’t an organization that pushed a one-size-fits-all solution,” one MEB leader reflected. “They listened to what we did as a business and created solutions that fit our needs” .
Regular design reviews ensured that technical decisions (from room control touch panels to ceiling mic placement) were aligned with real-world workflows. VIcom also coordinated with MEB’s contractors to handle infrastructure details like conduit, networking, and mounting hardware. This up-front communication minimized surprises during installation and kept the project on track.
Unique Challenges & Solutions
As a construction firm, MEB’s workforce spends the majority of time out in the field, making traditional meetings and trainings difficult . The challenge was to design spaces that any employee, whether a field foreman or an executive could walk into and use without hesitation .
-
Inter-office collaboration: Before the upgrade, Richmond staff had to drive to Chesapeake for meetings. VIcom’s solution—Teams/Skype-enabled rooms and a large Bid Room with dual-image Planar video wall allowed documents and live participants to be shared side-by-side, reducing travel while improving clarity .
-
Field crew training: Crews couldn’t afford to lose a day on-site for training. The upgraded Training Room, with relocated Poly video conferencing and distributed audio, gave field teams the ability to join sessions remotely and still engage meaningfully .
-
Ease of adoption: Knowing technology wasn’t second-nature for most staff, VIcom built systems around one-touch join, wireless presenting, and clear touch interfaces ensuring adoption from day one.
Even when scope changes arose like repositioning AV equipment for better sightlines or running additional cabling. VIcom worked in lockstep with MEB’s team to adapt on-site without delays.
The Impact
The result is a headquarters where collaboration feels effortless. The new rooms are booked multiple times daily , Richmond and Chesapeake teams meet without hours of driving, and field crews can participate in trainings while staying on the job. The technology also impressed outside partners: billion-dollar contractors visiting the space were surprised to see MEB ahead of them in AV sophistication .
Perhaps most importantly, the investment has become a recruitment and retention tool. “Every new hire comes into our office and they’re blown away by the technology,” one executive said . MEB is now replicating the model at its new Richmond office, extending the success across its footprint. The return on investment? “By far,” the team reports, not just in dollars saved, but in efficiency, connectivity, and employee engagement.
