Unique Challenges & Solutions: Building a professional theater from the ground up came with its share of challenges. VIcom’s team had to run miles of specialized cabling and conduit through the new building to connect the theater, control room, broadcast studio, and various labs. Routing all those cables within the building’s structure required creativity and close coordination with other trades. The fast-track construction environment meant field conditions sometimes deviated from the original plans – walls were moved, electrical rough-ins shifted – so the AV plans had to adapt in real time. For example, a high-lumen projector originally planned for one location had to be repositioned during installation to optimize sightlines in the finished theater. VIcom’s engineers quickly adjusted mounting and alignment on-site, working hand-in-hand with the construction crew to accommodate the change without delaying the schedule. Another challenge was integrating a custom intercom and paging system: the theater needed its own backstage communication and show paging, but it also had to tie into the campus-wide PA for school assemblies and emergency notices. VIcom’s engineering team designed a tailored solution, interfacing the performance intercom with Cape Henry’s existing paging system so that announcements could be routed clearly and selectively as needed. “We had to think on our feet when unforeseen changes came up,” says Avery Prindall, Lead AV Engineer at VIcom. “For instance, relocating that projector and pulling extra cable runs on short notice took flexibility and teamwork. Ultimately, having a client that trusted us and collaborated at every step made these challenges much easier to overcome.” Despite the complexity, VIcom navigated these hurdles through proactive problem-solving and a commitment to doing whatever it took to realize the school’s vision.

The Impact: The result of this collaborative effort is a world-class Innovation and Performing Arts Center that has quickly become one of the region’s premier performing arts venues – and an everyday learning space for students. The theater’s opening night showcased concert-quality sound and broadcast-ready video, on par with professional theaters, giving Cape Henry the ability to host high-profile performances and live-stream events with confidence. Just as importantly, students are now using the facility daily: theater tech crews of students run the soundboard and lighting for school productions, broadcasting classes produce multicamera event streams, and assemblies leverage the easy touchscreen controls for presentations. This dual-use success – professional production capability combined with educational accessibility – was the core goal from the start, and it has been fully realized. “From the outset we needed a dual-purpose solution – professional equipment that our students could actually use,” reflects Dr. Chris Garren, Head of School at Cape Henry Collegiate. “VIcom delivered on that vision.
